We are pleased to announce that our Elemental Analyzer Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (EA-IRMS) product line is fully compliant with the European standard, CEN-18054:2024. This new method provides a standardized approach for the determination of stable isotope ratios in foodstuffs, enhancing quality control and traceability across the food industry.
Why the new standard matters
CEN-18054:2024, published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in January 2025, establishes clear guidelines for the analysis of food samples using EA-IRMS to determine carbon and/or nitrogen isotope ratios in either solids or liquids, though the method does not cover sample preparation requirements or interpretation of the results generated. This method is crucial for verifying the authenticity and origin of food products, detecting adulteration, and ensuring consumer trust.
Our EA-IRMS systems, known for their precision, reliability, and ease of use, are ideally suited for meeting the stringent requirements of CEN-18054:2024.
Our instruments offer:
High Precision and Accuracy: Delivering reliable and reproducible isotope ratio measurements essential for compliance with the new standard.
Robust Performance: Ensuring consistent results across a wide range of food matrices.
Automated Workflows: Simplifying sample preparation and analysis, increasing laboratory efficiency.
Comprehensive Software Solutions: Providing user-friendly data acquisition and processing for seamless integration with CEN-18054:2024 protocols.
"We are delighted to confirm the compatibility of our EA-IRMS solutions with the new CEN-18054:2024 method," said Dr Toby Boocock, IRMS Technical Product Manager at Elementar. "This standardization is a significant step forward in ensuring the integrity of the food supply chain. Our instruments are designed to meet the evolving needs of the food industry, and we are committed to providing our customers with the tools they need to achieve accurate and reliable results."
The implementation of CEN-18054:2024 will enable food producers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies to:
Verify the geographical origin of food products.
Detect adulteration and mislabelling.
Ensure compliance with quality and safety regulations.
Enhance traceability throughout the food supply chain.
Elementar offers a range of EA-IRMS systems, including vario ISOTOPE select, vario ISOTOPE cube and vario PYRO cube, as well as our dedicated solution bundle, BiovisION, each designed to meet the specific needs of the food industry. Our team of experts is available to provide comprehensive support and guidance to customers implementing the CEN-18054:2024 method.
