New EN 17505 Standard for soil and waste characterization

TOC analysis is a key tool for assessing the organic content of diverse samples, from wastewater and industrial process water, to solid waste and soil. As this technology has evolved, so has the need for standardized methodologies that ensure accurate and reliable results.

The EN 17505 standard has just been released, providing a new European norm for labs undertaking total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. Focusing on soil and waste characterisation, the standard cites reference samples of dry solid samples of sediment, soil, soil with anthropogenic admixtures and solid waste”.

The new norm provides guidelines for labs using the temperature-ramping method (which incorporates TOC400, ROC, and TIC900). It is based on the German norm, DIN 19539. Standard compatible instruments to both norms are already available, like our soli TOC® cube.

Understanding the EN 17505 Standard

The standard is likely to be adopted without alteration in CEN (European Committee for Standardization) member states, which include much of Europe and the UK.

Whether or not a lab will have to comply with the standard depends on their industry and local rules. For example, in the UK, labs testing certain types of solid waste for landfill have to submit their processes to the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for review. They might choose to use the new standard to demonstrate that they are following industry best practice but are not obliged to do so.

We are proud to have contributed data to the development of the standard, along with some of our customers. The follow materials were used for validation:

  • Soils: mineral and urban

  • Tailing materials from coal mining

  • Sediments

  • Waste: incineration ash, foundry sand and construction waste

Ready for standard-compatible analyses: the soli TOC® cube

Our soli TOC® cube will be compatible with the new standard, and has already been used by our German customers, who were the first to adopt the standard. Our calibration routines allow you to meet the requirements of the EN 17505 standard, and be confident that your results are reliable, consistent, and compliant.

The soli TOC® cube offers faster processing for large numbers of samples due to its use of the temperature ramping method. The drastic reduction in sample preparation involved allows for significantly faster turnaround times. It also reduces the mess often associated with the acidification method.

The EN 17505 standard provides an important framework for ensuring the accuracy and consistency of TOC analysis. Our commitment to aligning our instruments with this standard demonstrates our dedication to helping you seamlessly integrate new standards into your workflow.
